Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde
was an amateur production
presented by
Ecclesall Theatre Company.
Adapted by
Paul Voodini
from the original novella by
Robert Louis Stevenson.
'Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde' was an original production exclusive to Ecclesall Theatre Company, written by Paul Voodini from Robert Louise Stevenson's classic 1886 novella, and directed by Kiera Rhodes. This was a fast-paced thriller with comedic elements and stand-out performances from a stellar cast. The story followed Detective Inspector Enfield and his trusty assistant PC Carrier, as they attempted to unravel the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Helping them along their way was Mr Utterson, Dr Jekyll's oldest and best friend. Perhaps together they could solve the mystery of just who this Mr Hyde was, what his connection to Dr Jekyll was, and why there were no records whatsoever of Mr Hyde existing before a series of awful murders took place.
As the victims of Mr Hyde, Rose and Mary provided the story with some memorable and touching moments as their ghosts sang folk songs on the streets of London. The principles were superbly supported by the stagehands who provided slick and entertaining scene changes, while also taking on characters of their own.
Mention should also be made of the set and technical effects engineered by Richard Gillett, which provided the show with all the eerie fog, flickering streetlights, and weird laboratories that you would expect from a production of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde!
In terms of ticket sales, this was ETC's most successful show since 'Dial M for Murder' back in 2022. A fitting accolade for a wonderful production.
